Resource Mapping and Visualization

Because solar energy resource like other natural resources is distributed over space and time, it can be spatially represented and constitute a part of GIS knowledge base. Just like precious metals and minerals alternative renewable energy sources can be mapped. The maps of wind, solar radiation, bedrock heat, water runoff, tidal and wave energy, to name just a few, are our charts to the future. Spatial analysis and visualization of geo-spatial data on solar energy distribution and availability are important decision support tools for sustainable development. These tools facilitate the integration of geospatial and socio-economic information in sound decision- and policy making by bridging the gap between scientists and decision-makers, bridging the gap between disciplines, and supporting the strategic assessment of environmental issues. Digital mapping and visualization of solar energy resource distribution on regional and municipal levels incorporated in a Decision Support System will allow developing and implementing policies, strategies and action plans for deployment of solar applications.
